The History of Cotai
Cotai is a 5.2 square kilometer region of recently reclaimed land. It is found on the Seac Pai Bay between Taipa and Coloane islands. Reclaimed land is literally filled in land between the islands of Coloane and Taipa. The name Cotai is a portmanteau of the names of the two islands it connects. The region was reclaimed in 2005-2006, shortly before the opening of the Grand Waldo Hotel.
The creation of this region was a project intended to provide Macau with a new gambling and tourism area. Macau is so densely populated and land scarce, hence the need for a new Casino district. Many hotels, resorts, and casinos can be found in this district known as the Cotai Strip.
The Cotai Strip
The term “Cotai Strip” was actually a term coined by the American Las Vegas Sands Corporation with regard to its building of a strip of hotel-casinos in Cotai. Las Vegas Sands coined the term envisioning a development similar to the Vegas Strip in America on a smaller scale. In fact, the term was even patented in regards to Las Vegas Sands Corps properties. In spite of this, the term is used to describe all the casinos on the strip today
Modern and Future Developments
The Cotai Strip today has expanded greatly and now has eight Casinos and Resorts on the strip, with five in development. These resorts include the Galaxy Mega Resort, Studio City, City of Dreams, The Venetian Macao, The Plaza Macau, and Broadway Casino.
There are other casinos planned for development over the next year. The 13 Hotel and Casino being one of the most luxurious among them. Others include the Parisian, The MGM Cotai, and Wynn Palace Casino Hotel. All of these casinos and resorts are expected to be opened within the course of the next year. They are mostly aimed at the VIP market, but with Mass market appeal as well.
