This garden was founded and opened at the end of the 19th century in 1898, the same year that the Vasco da Gama Garden (Jardim de Vasco de Gama) was founded in his honor. It is a monument in deep commemoration to the victory of the Portuguese in defending Macau from the failed Dutch invasion in 1622. One can imagine a very different city today had the Dutch been successful in their attack on Macau in the 17th century.
Intricate stone terraces guide visitors of the garden along the busy Avenida de Sidónio Pais to a monument erected in honor of this historic victory. Flower beds and clusters of trees adorn this gorgeous recreational garden. There are benches, tables and shaded areas for whomever should find themselves enjoying the beauty of this commemorative park honoring a victory that plays so pivotal a role in Macau as it is today.
